Types of Sedation
Sedation can be beneficial for those who suffer from anxiety or have difficulty sitting still. As we offer three forms of sedation, we can help you determine which option is best for you during an initial consultation.
We believe that receiving high-quality care should be an easy, stress-free experience.
Nitrous Oxide
Commonly called “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is a form of conscious sedation. The gas is delivered through a mask that rests comfortably over your nose, and the dosage can be regulated throughout treatment by a dental professional. Many patients report feeling a tingling sensation in their extremities, or a feeling of “heaviness." While you will still be aware of your surroundings, you should feel calm and at ease. The effects of nitrous oxide wear office almost immediately after the procedure. As such, this is the only form of sedation that does not require a friend or loved one to accompany you to and from our office.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedatives can be taken either the night before or one hour prior to your dental appointment. This form of sedation produces a state of deep relaxation that often results in patients falling asleep during treatment. However, it is important to note that you will still be able to respond to questions and directions while sedated. The effects of oral sedation linger for several hours after treatment, so you will need a trusted companion to drive you to and from our practice. You will not be able to drive for the remainder of the day.
IV Sedation
IV sedation is administered directly into your bloodstream. As a result, the effects come on much faster. The dosage can be adjusted at any point during the procedure, making it one of the safest and most effective methods of sedation. Typically, patients drift off into a sleep-like state and are relaxed and unaware throughout the duration of treatment. As the effects of IV sedation take several hours to wear off, you will need to schedule a friend or loved one to take you to and from your appointment.
